The Cave
The sculpture of the television was carved out of ice using a chain saw with 24-hour news projected onto the back. Behind the ice hung the text to Plato’s Cave analogy which, in short, questions where one gets their own source of truth with the least desirable coming from shadows cast from men in front of a man-made light source (comparable in the modern era to believing information on television or the internet from uncertified sources). The installation was created on November 6th, 2004, during the beginning of the US fighting in Iraq.
This was the first time Papaha had carved ice with a chainsaw and found it much easier than cardboard blocks or wood. After sculpting the shape of the television he worked on a book shelf below with smaller details.
